Digital X-Rays
Everett, WA

A digital X-ray is very similar to a regular X-ray but it comes with some unique benefits. Technological advances have improved the way that dental offices operate, and some of the greatest achievements have come in the field of radiography. Today, digital X-ray technology is available, allowing patients to have radiographic images taken of their teeth that are safer and more convenient for both them and their dentist. Find out why so many dental offices are switching to dental X-ray imaging and how this move can benefit you and your family.

How Digital X-Rays Work

Digital X-rays work in a similar manner to the traditional dental X-rays of years past. However, unlike traditional radiographs, digital X-rays won’t require the use of film to capture the image of your teeth. With a digital X-ray, we will inert a sensor into the mouth in order to capture the images of your gums and teeth, and while it will resemble the film used for traditional X-rays, the digital sensor will actually send the image right to a computer. This allows us and our hygienists to immediately view the images chair side on a computer screen.

Benefits of Digital X-Rays

There are numerous reasons that dental practices like ours are moving away from traditional X-rays in favor of the more convenient digital option:

•  Less radiation- Digital X-ray equipment will expose patients to significantly less radiation than the traditional variety. Researchers believe that digital options actually use 90% less radiation than the film varieties, and while both options have been proven to be safe, digital images may be a better selection for patients that need to have frequent images taken.
•  Improved image quality- With traditional X-rays, we would get one image to look at, and zooming in to take a closer look at a problem area was not an option. With digital radiographs, the images can be magnified, enlarged, and manipulated in order to get a better understanding of what is going on with the structures of your teeth. This improved image quality has made it easier than ever to detect problems during their early stages, such as small cavities.
•  Less time- With traditional X-rays, there would be a significant delay in the time it took for the X-ray image to be captured and for us to be able to see the results. This is because the film would need to be developed before review. With digital X-rays, the images can be viewed immediately, allowing the picture to appear before your very eyes almost instantly.
•  Improved collaboration- If your digital X-ray indicates a problem for which you will need to see a dental specialist, these images can easily be shared. Rather than copying expensive film and mailing it to the new practitioner, we can simply send over an electronic file that contains your most recent images. This can also save you the cost of needing to get new X-rays taken at the specialty office.
