Child happily brushing his teeth. The DEXIS CariVu is one of the newest technologies to hit the world of dentistry, and it is allowing us to take a new approach to discovering problems within the teeth. The CariVu is a compact and portable device used to detect cavities that takes advantage of trans-illumination technology to identify lesions and cracks and fillings. Find out how this innovative technology is revolutionizing the way that we care for your teeth.

Using the DEXIS CariVu

The CariVu detection system uses infrared trans-illumination in order to see through a tooth, highlighting conditions that can’t be easily detected by other cavity detection technologies on the market. By using the CariVu system, we are able to quickly confirm diagnoses, and the system can easily be incorporated into routine dental cleanings by hygienists.

CariVu images are helpful in providing an efficient diagnosis. Images captured with this technology are similar in appearance to X-ray images, and they are read in the same way. Lesions will appear as darkened area, and when compared to fluorescent imaging, this technique is much simpler to use. CariVu images will quickly be displayed on a screen next to any photos or X-rays of the same tooth, allowing us to compare them quickly and easily.

Benefits of the CariVu System

There are several benefits to using the DEXIS CariVu system that are improving dental practices across the country:

•  Lightweight and portable-The CariVu system is not only easy to use, but it is also lightweight and can even be operated one-handed. The system is portable, allowing it to easily be moved between exam rooms, and the attachments are simple to remove and reattach. Additionally, the hand piece can be easily decontaminated using wipes so that it is ready for the next patient quickly.
•  Provides a comprehensive look at your oral health- The CariVu system enables us to fully evaluate the condition of your teeth, allowing us to determine the best treatment or preventive option. When combined with radiographs, these images can become a vital part of your patient record, allowing us to evaluate your cavities over time.
•  Provides an alternative to traditional X-rays- If you are unwilling to get a traditional X-ray or simply cannot tolerate the rigid sensors that will need to be placed in your mouth to have a traditional intraoral image taken, the CariVu can be a great option for you. The tips are flexible and soft, allowing for comfortable and easy positioning.
•  Can serve as a second opinion- If we find a suspicious area on your X-ray, the CariVu can provide a great second opinion. Certain forms of decay can be extremely difficult to detect with traditional X-ray imaging, especially when cavities are small or are just beginning to form, so the CariVu can give us a clearer picture of what is going on. This information will provide a better idea if your cavity requires immediate treatment or if it can simply be monitored over time.
